Hi y'all! In November of 2016, my nephew Declan was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer at only 17 months old. He was rushed to Minneapolis and a (honestly brutal) 9-month treatment plan was developed. This was great news BUT this plan required him to remain in the twin cities, 5 hours from home, for the course of treatment. With a house, full-time jobs, and my two oldest nieces at home in East Grand Forks, my sister Lyndsey, and brother-in-law Drew had to figure out what this season of life would look like.
Which is when the hospital social worker mentioned the Ronald McDonald House. There was no way to know at first, how much this place would mean. More than a place to sleep and get a home-cooked meal, the house became a place to relax, to play, and a community to belong to with friends found in other families and the sweet staff. For those 9 months, it became their home.
On August 4, 2017, Declan and his family left the Ronald McDonald House to spend his last days in their East Grand Forks home. Two days later, on August 6th, he departed to his heavenly home. Every year, near this anniversary of leaving RMH for the last time, we try to give back a small portion of what was given to us throughout Declan's treatment. We would want to enable the same gifts of comfort and community to be shared with other families experiencing childhood illnesses. We were so blessed by this wonderful place and would love to pass it on.
